I think the reason people have a problem with Bella is not because she gave up being a "career women", going to college and all the life experince along with it to be with edward but mostly because it seems like it just all kinda fell into her lap. She never (besides like 2 times) got mad or showed any more emotion then that of some good girl from the 1800's. She was always doing the right thing.Bella was too reserved and never seemed to really give into her wants. I have to say the whole martyr act kinda gets old after a while. She was too unreal, and untouchable. Also what you said about her latching onto Jacob. It just seemed as she just went with him because she was too weak to fight for her man.

I totally agree with everything you've written here. One thing that bugged the hell out of me is Meyer's treatment of vampires. If you were pretty much indestructible and immortal, would you allow yourself to develop feelings for lesser beings?

Granted, we are fond of our pet cats and dogs. But ... we also put them out of their misery if they are damaged or dying.

What motivations would a vampire have for falling hopelessly into a codependent relationship with a human?

It's like a human wanting to spend the rest of his/her natural life married to a very intelligent chimpanzee.

If you're more than a century old, why would you want to hang out with a wangsty teenager?

Cool site and I love and agree with your NaNo comments. Feel like I'm rejoining civilization the last few days! I also love the last quote in your header:“Well-behaved women rarely make history.” Here's to us bad girls!
P.S. How in the world did you get the winner badge in your sidebar? I'm having the hardest time....

I find it funny that in fantasy and Sci Fi, genres meant to entertain, we are so incredibly critical of them. I think the fact that the stories deal with such fantastic setting makes us more critical. We have already suspended our belief to accept that magic is real or humans and alien travel between the stars together. When we start to be confronted by plot inconsistencies or bad characterization we get upset.
The fantastic settings can make the story more enjoyable, but only if we believe in the characters. We have to accept these people into our minds, our hearts and our souls. We have to root for these people when they fight, cheer for them when they succeed and mourn when they fail.
Nothing can ruin a good story faster than when a character we know and love does something we know they shouldn’t do. We are supposed to emotionally bond with these people. We know them well and are offended when they do things we know they wouldn’t do.
That’s what makes us put down books, turn off the TV, or walk out of movie theaters.

Will you be putting up any excerpts here? You can do it! Optimism! I believe in you!

I was wondering if I was ranty enough for someone to comment, ha.

I think you're right, though. When I did read the books I did enjoy them, I was swept up in them. They're just well written enough for me to have fallen into the world, and the characters are firmly characterized enough for us to even be having this discussion at all, which I think is a testament to Meyer's writing, even if it's not earth-shattering over all.

Still debating going to the book release party, though. The former seventeen-year-old in me is curious and geeky about it but the adult in me is shaking her head with cynicism.
